My friend Alan over at Movers Chicago sent me some great tips to share with you regarding moving. As far as I know moving is considered the #3 worst stressor in your life, the top two are divorce and death. So if moving is up there along with death then these tips will benefit you and your friends to have a smoother transition.
Moving into a new home marks a milestone in your life each time! No matter how many times you've moved, it can be surprising how chaotic this time can be. It's pretty exciting until you realize how much hard work it takes to move all of your belongings from point A to point B. With a bit of proper organization and preparation, you're looking at a much easier moving process in Chicago! Here are some specific tips to keep in mind when you're planning a move.
1. Get started as soon as you can
There are likely a lot of things on your mind as you prepare to move. You will be doing yourself a huge favor by starting the process of packing as soon as you're sure you're going to be moving. Thinking ahead is always a smart idea when it comes to the moving process! Downsizing should be one of the first steps to make it as easy as possible for yourself and household members. The sooner the better DO NOT procrastinate.
2. Get rid of things you don't need
The easiest way to have less things to move is to toss and donate items that aren't getting as much use. It is the smartest route to go through the bulk of your items a month or two before you start packing. This way, you aren't dealing with another task when you're trying to move from one household to the next.
3. Create your own tracking system
You will certainly benefit from organization! One of the best ways to do it is to create your own tracking system while you move. You can make something as simple as a list in a notebook, or get more advanced with an online spreadsheet. You can detail exactly what is in each box and prioritize what to move first when you do things this way. You can also coordinate by color add colored dots to each box and also add that same color dot to your tracking sheet.
4. Color code boxes by room
Take the time to pick a color for each area of the house. Putting color coordinated stickers on the boxes will allow you to see clearly where to place boxes when you're unpacking. Try to keep the boxes out of places where there will be a lot of foot traffic so you aren't dealing with clutter on top of the general chaos that comes with moving.
5. Take advantage of your luggage
Why not use your luggage to pack things? After all, you're going to have to move it anyway! Might as well fill it with items that would have taken up extra space in your moving boxes. Try to stick to packing your luggage with things that will be in the same space so you don't have to deal with running across the house to put it in the correct place while unpacking. You can also use the nooks and crannies of each pocket to add small items like electrical cords, tools, remote controls etc.
6. Get extra boxes
You will always need more boxes than you think! You never realize how heavy items are until you place them into a cardboard box. If you're buying boxes from your moving company, you can return them for a partial refund. You will want to save extra boxes for the everyday items that you've been waiting to move like your bedroom linens and toiletries. You can also rent recyclable totes which requires no assembly. Or you can always go to amazon and get up to 30 boxes delivered to your home, Amazon cheap boxes.
7. Group all cleaning supplies together
Chances are, you're going to want to clean up the home you're moving from. Put together all of your cleaning supplies, and make it one of the last boxes that you move so that you can clean as you go. It will make things a lot more manageable especially when you're not in the mood to clean. And don't forget your laundry basket you can use that to add all the cleaning supplies if possible.
8. Make sure all of your important documents are in your possession
If you're using a moving service, be sure that you keep all of your vital documents on hand. The last thing you want is to potentially have missing or damaged birth certificates and records. No matter how awesome your moving service is, accidents do happen, and it's better to be safe than sorry.
9. Protect your glassware
Whether you have heirlooms from family members or not, you want to make sure you're taking steps to protect your glassware when moving. There are cell boxes specifically made for transporting wine glasses and goblets, and it's totally worth the extra investment. You can even check in with your local grocer and liquor store, they might have some that they will be willing to part with for free. If your looking to be thrifty you can always use your socks to cover up your glassware.
10. Utilize online resources
There are so many helpful tips and online discussion groups on social media that can help you get settled before, during, and after a move into a new place. This is especially helpful if you made a long distance move and aren't completely familiar with the area. Community specific groups on sites like Facebook are excellent for finding recommendations for restaurants, handy man services, local events, and more.
Regardless of what advice that you hear regarding moving, it's smart to personalize your moving process in a way that makes sense to you! If you don't think color coding will help you, skip over that and figure out what does. These are nine great tips to follow when you're going through the motions of the moving process, so it is a good place to start deciding what works best for you specifically. Don't put off starting to organize and pack, because it is so much easier when you have ample time to work with instead of dealing with a time crunch.
When you're more efficient in your moving, you can enjoy your new home a lot quicker, and that's what it is all about in the end. Remember, you're not alone, and there are tons of resources like this on the web that will benefit you. When you feel yourself getting overwhelmed, just remember the end goal of being able to relax into your gorgeous new setting. Congratulations on this life milestone, and let the packing begin!
